This was a fun challenge- though LOTS of nerves involved! It's pretty huge imaging what your design would look like on a billboard.... can you even conceptualize what 42' by 60' looks like??
To design my look I started by looking through the Marie Claire magazine we were given for inspiration. I noticed that there was a large representation of outer wear throughout, like vests, blazers, all sorts of jackets. I love outer wear so I decided to make that my primary look.
*Remember* when Tim gives us a challenge we have 30 minutes to sketch and then we go straight to Mood for fabrics so there is NO time to have an analytical brainstorming session with yourself. You've got to commit and go with it! Shopping at Mood is always wild. Has anyone mentioned yet that it's 90 something degrees in NYC and super humid so racing through isles of fabrics that tower over above your head can be dizzying.
This was only my second time at Mood also so I was still getting used to where everything was- which explains why I ran into the corner of a column in a mad dash for fusing. Thank GOD the camera's weren't there to catch me seeing stars but a Mood associate was and she definitely looked terrified for me.
In my design, I went for tailoring, contrast and fit. I used a charcoal suiting fabric with bronze lorax threads inside, a yellowish contrast fabric and jersey for the skirt.
It came together pretty well until I was sewing the zipper in and I cut it off before I finished securing it. I had a minor melt down (it was at 11pm or so at night) and April came to the rescue. Thank you April!! She pulled out her pliars and got it back together really fast and saved me from throwing myself off the roof of Parsons.
The only other blunder I had was shoes and hair. None of the shoes worked with the look so I went with a nude pump to make it dissapear- but the pump made it look a bit older. When I went down for hair, I said to do Dita Von Teese Hollywood glamor BUT I meant to say Taylor Swift! The difference is like 20 years. So with that said, she looked great but a little more sophisticated than I had intended and missing the 20 something age demographic for the Marie Claire customer.
About Jason going home- I'm not sure if he has a website to see for yourself, but I saw some menswear jackets he made and they were AMAZING. He can design, but working under the Project Runway timelines just wasn't his thing so perhaps that explains his coming unglued.
